Plays

This darkly comic new play tackles the absurdities of life in cash-strapped institutions. In a world premiere production directed by Kristjan Thor, a theater department is forced to undergo active shooter training. When the afternoon unravels into chaos, these educators discover the costs of a divided community.

Produced by the Bushwick Starr at HERE Arts, November 10 – December 11, 2021. With Alison Cimmet, Nora Cole, Tracy Hazas, Lou Liberatore, Luis Moreno and KK Moggie.

Timeline

Preparedness was developed with support from The Bushwick Starr for a world premiere in their 2019-20 season.

In March 2020, work on the Spring 2020 production of Preparedness was paused as the creative team and theater collectively grappled with the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak. The production was indefinitely postponed.

Episode #3 of the Bushwick Starr’s podcast, Starr Talk, a conversation with the Starr’s Co-Founder Sue Kessler and director Kris Thor, was recorded at the end of our truncated Hubbard Hall residency that March. We discuss the origins of the project and the dramaturgical questions raised by the postponement.

In October 2021, after extensive revisions of the play, we began rehearsals at The Shed for the world premiere of Preparedness, which was presented by the Bushwick Starr in association with HERE Arts, in November/December 2021.

In July 2020, Preparedness was included in the The Kilroys List 2020. The Kilroys is a bi-coastal collective of artists who work against gender bias in American new play theater. Their semi-annual List is a survey of excellence that highlights outstanding, unproduced new plays by women, trans, and non-binary writers. Check out the full list.
